When last did you deeply consider the value of spending time outdoors?
“Nature itself is the best physician.” – Hippocrates
Evidence supporting this age-old philosophy has only continued to grow over time.
Now, more than ever, we have drifted further from nature and into predominantly urban living; it is vital to realise the importance of reconnecting to nature. With lockdowns and WFH an ever-present factor in our daily lives, we need to create awareness around activities that enhance our health and well-being.
According to Dr. Andrew Weil, a world-renowned leader and pioneer in the field of integrative medicine, “Healing is making whole, restoring a state of perfection and balance that has been lost.”
Why are we so quick to justify our spending on supplements, pills and doctor visits – when time in nature is there for the taking and may just be what the doctor ordered. In our fast-paced lives, maybe we feel there is just not enough time to indulge in the luxury of languishing outdoors – even though we know, and science confirms, just how good nature is for us.
Nature heals and connects us to our core roots and instincts. Through sensory awareness, it enables us to feel more present in our bodies, more connected to ourselves and consequently to others, and inspires awe and wonder about life and about this world.
Whether we merely take the opportunity to slow down and “smell the roses”, so to speak, or engage in any level of physical activity, thus improving our fitness, the benefits are numerous. We are bound to get a healthy dose of Vitamin D, regulate our biological clock, decrease our stress levels, declutter our mind, increase our endorphin levels, and improve our focus and even our memory. And all this, over and above scientific proof that being outdoors improves specific ailments – of the body as well as the mind and spirit.
So if you think you have no time for nature, maybe it’s time to think again. And to make a conscious effort to factor in “outside time”. What better way to improve your life quality – in more ways than one?
