“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” — Carl Jung
Every one of us carries a story about money. Often, it’s not a story we chose; it’s one we inherited. This is why we keep bringing this up with our clients. It’s the stories we inherit that are often the hardest to notice, and rewrite.
Perhaps you grew up believing money was scarce and had to be clung to tightly. Or that wealth was a measure of worth. Or that talking about money was taboo. Some believe success means constant growth; others feel guilty for having more than those around them.
These narratives usually begin in childhood, shaped by what we saw and heard in our families. We absorb them quietly, without question and then spend decades living them out, often without realising.
At first glance, these stories can seem harmless. But over time they can hold us back: from investing boldly, from enjoying what we’ve earned, from planning wisely, or from passing on a healthy relationship with money to the next generation.
One client once confided: “I just don’t feel like I deserve to enjoy my money. I save and save, but never spend.” Another said: “I keep chasing more because I’m afraid of falling behind, even though I have more than enough.”
Recognising your own money story is the first step to rewriting it. So here are a few gentle questions to reflect on:
– What’s your earliest memory of money?
– When you think of someone “successful,” what comes to mind?
– Do you feel more comfortable saving, spending, giving, or earning — and why?
– What unspoken rules about money did your family live by?
Bringing these stories into the light allows you to see where they support you… and where they no longer serve you.
Rewriting them doesn’t mean rejecting everything you’ve learned. It means consciously choosing which beliefs align with the life you want today. For some, that might mean learning to enjoy their wealth without guilt. For others, it could mean letting go of the idea that constant accumulation is the only sign of progress.
We believe financial planning isn’t just about numbers. It’s about aligning your resources with your values and aspirations. When you uncover and reshape your money story, you open the door to decisions that feel authentic, not automatic.
If you’re curious to explore your own narrative, and to craft a new chapter that reflects who you are today, we’d love to walk that journey with you.
We advise, you thrive.
